Glenn Beck accused Tara O'Toole, Under Secretary for Science and Technology in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, of being a Marxist.

Smear: Tara O'Toole is a Marxist

Glenn Beck: "I'm waiting for a good reason why every person that pops up in this administration is a Marxist, like Dr. Tara O'Toole, new nominee for the high level position in the Department of Homeland Security."

This claim was summarily debunked in 1993 when O'Toole was President Clinton's choice for Assistant Secretary for Environment, Safety and Health.  O'Toole once belonged to a reading group, called the Northeast Feminist Scholars which was called Marxist Feminist Group 1 when it was first found in 1973.  O'Toole was confirmed.

No Indication That She Adheres To Marxist Ideology: Meanwhile, Energy Department officials scrambled to spin this one. Deputy Secretary William White, in a statement, said the organization was "a women's reading and discussion group named Northeast Feminist Scholars." It was called Marxist Feminist Group when it was founded in 1973 but changed its name several years ago, White said, adding that O'Toole "never did or said anything indicating an adherence to Marxist ideology." [Washington Post, Fumbling the Bell, 7/7/1993]

Maine Senator Olympia Snowe Asked O'Toole About Her Involvement With The Group: "You had a controversy in your previous confirmation, that just for the record, because it's likely to come up at some point again, I would just like to give you the opportunity to respond to" asked Snowe.  O'Toole described the group as "academics, again, many of whom were economists. And they met three times a year for a weekend, and we discussed topics such as aging parents, math phobia among women, books that we read, international events and so forth. "It did not do any political advocacy. It was not Marxist in any way, shape or form."  Snowe did not press O'Toole on the matter.  [Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs, 6/10/2009]
